Travellers make a big difference to our lives!

I have three friends who have just returned from overseas and I've been noticing how expansive and open my thinking has been lately.

Michelle has returned from South Africa with a collection of amazing photos and incredible stories about how things are done in that incredible country and how alert you need to be on a minute by minute basis.

Ilya has returned from a trip to a film festival in Chechoslavakia, another festival in Kazakhstan, through to Shanghai and then to Moscow. His cultural insights and reports of the amazing economic progress in Russia, China and Chechoslavakia is mind boggling! He made a statement that literally blew my mind when he said:"There is only one Capitalist Economy in the world and it is China!" ...Phew!
And Chris has returned from his bicycle trip from Tibet through to Kathmandu - we haven't spoken yet about the trip, but the incredible photos he has sent me have brought back fond memories of the vast and amazing Himalayas and seeing the pictures of him being a man with such a strong body and strong legs that he could climb a wall on his bike - have taken me out of the same old same old life here in the Waikato!

How Inspiring!!!!!!!

Not only that, our niece Kathleen and her husband Nepia stopped by last night with their family of five straight from the airport on their return from their first trip overseas to Sydney. I drank from the looks in their eyes and feasted on their stories and witnessed the huge changes that travel makes upon our outlooks and imagination. And to hear about my home town Sydney from the mouths and experiences of first time Kiwi's was absolutely beautiful.

I have listened to their stories, I've listened for their changes, their expanses and also their culture shock coming back to the New Zealand context and dominant paradigm. They have all opened up and changed, some more aware of that than others and I have been opened up and changed simply by being in contact with them.

Many people fear and avoid the traveller from afar... - Me? I welcome them into my hearth and home, feed them with nourishing broth and listen to their stories with a hungry heart and feasting ears!

Acclaimed Kiwi, actor/director Michael Hurst, currently at the helm of New Zealand Opera's Hansel and Gretal says it really well:
"Travel is enriching and crucial to gaining a deeper understanding of what it is to be a human being."
