Support Vs Rescue: Lesson number one:

Support
______________________
Rescue

All coaches need to know the difference between these two ways of working with people.

In fact, if you find yourself rescuing someone, you are not coaching them.

How do you know if you are Supporting someone?
  • It's all about what they are trying to achieve, not what you want them to achieve
  • If you respect that person, respect their motivation, respect their ability to learn and respect their ability to come up with brilliant solutions
  • It's all about them
  • You are simply helping them to find their own way to solve their problem
How do you know if you are Rescuing someone?
  • It's all about what you want them to achieve - you feel like they are clueless
  • You have no respect for them, for their motivation, for their ability to learn and their ability to come up with a brilliant solution.  It's all about you racing in and saving them and showing off your own brilliance.
  • It's all about you.
  • You are taking over and doing it the right way and solving their problem for them
The questions are:  Which is more productive? Which way produces someone who can take charge and make things happen?  Which way empowers people to be responsible?

This is only the beginning. Get to know clarity. Email me, Mike Kennedy...
