This is why we have holidays.
We recuperate, we refresh and we regain our ability to think clearly again!
And sometimes we don't take the holiday. Sometimes, usually for a pressing and important reason, we squander the opportunity to recharge and release.
A good example of this was a man I met in hospital early in January 09.
A dynamic, driven and goal oriented man who had worked hard and passionately at building a new business in 2008.
During the Christmas rush, leaving for his holiday, he hit a car not quite head on, not his fault, just one of those being in the wrong place at the wrong time things.
He ended up in hospital with broken bones, new steel pins to keep him together and lots of time on his hands, being flat on his back.
When I met him two weeks later, he told me he got to a point where he had regained his ability to think clearly again. He then reviewed some decisions he had made previous to the accident (in his assumadly un-clearly thinking state) and he made some very resourceful and well structured decisions in his hospital bed.
(By the way, on his meal table he had his laptop complete with wireless internet connection and his mobile phone by his bedside! This was his office, not just a hospital bed - the guy is unstoppable!)
This makes me reach for my diary to make sure I have all the first week of each school holiday pencilled out in 2009 so I can nurture my greatest asset - my clarity of thinking!
This also makes me realise the importance of regular reflection - Pretty much every time I spend reflecting, I discover time after time, things that I have completely missed, new ideas and a greater understanding of what I am doing.
So, have you got your regular holidays booked and budgeted for now?
And what structure are you going to put around having time to reflect?
Remember, your clear thinking is your greatest asset!
