I've met a lot of artists who live in their Garret (an attic, usually a small, wretched one), suffering for the sake of their art. And not just Artists, but Professionals, Tradesmen, Musicians, Event Organisers - people of real talent, who are struggling in the areas of finance.
And at this time, change is drying up traditional means of generating income. We can review and take heed of the lessons of Leverage from the few artists who managed to leverage their talents into ongoing income.
Take Ken Done for example.
Ken paints naive style - you can see his tea towel below. He started to make his artwork available on T shirts, tea towels, bed linen, furniture surfaces and kids beach wear - turning mundane household items into works of art. Bringing Art and beauty into the masses of homes in the world. He's now a multi millionaire, living in his mansion on the Sydney Harbour, doing now what he wants to - paint paintings. He does this, not because he has to do it to earn money, but because he wants to. The money making machine is in place. And the cost of these works of art? They fetch a premium for what they are, but they are still affordable for the masses!
Nick Cave (of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds fame) put his drawings and lyrics on tea towels that grace the kitchens of amazing cosmopolitan women like my sister Colleen, who is proud that she has this prized piece of art in her life! Reg Mombasa of Mambo has done it with T Shirts and surf gear - uplifting the mundane into art that's accessible by the masses.
How about Michael Graves, a Princeton University Architecture Professor and one of the most renowned architects and product designers in the world. And he designed this toilet brush - I found it today in our local dairy for $NZ3.99. Now you can have world class design in your bathroom at a really low cost. And what do you think this means for Professor Graves? Especially when he turns his hands to hi - design mops, tea pots, furniture and anything else you could want in your home to make it more "Hi-touch"! Do you think he is waiting for his next client to knock on his door? Do you think he needs that?

This is called "Leverage".
It's work that you do once...and you get paid for it ongoingly!
In the Personal Growth industry, Anthony Robbins turned the seminar model on it's ear. Firstly by catering to rooms with 5,000 people in them and secondly, by using advertorials to get the people on seats. He took transformation from catering to a select few, to being seen as a commodity, set between (in his own words..) Bowflex and the Magic Mop! He leveraged the numbers of paid customers and also his method of marketing = brilliant results for filling the seminars and incredible results in marketing his books, Cd's and other courses!
So, how do we shift your mind to what you can leverage? If you set your mind to what you could create, that would add value to large amounts of people, that would be affordable, accessible and advantageous for the end user - what could that be?
Is it a product, like Ken Done and Michael Graves or is it information, packaged into seminars, books, Cd's and webinars? Is it an experience - like all five of our examples?
You might find a really good piece of leverage, hidden behind the haze of what you consider "Your Work" to be. And this one piece of leverage might mean the difference between you thriving or just surviving the coming times.
Time to get thinking!
