Is that it? Is that what you really, really want?

Seth Godin's recent post - Is that it? talks about the state of mind of us "consumers" where we are never satisfied with our products, our careers, our partners, our cars, our homes - everything!

Certainly most people come to me after a lifetime of chasing other people's expectations and have usually never set a goal that inspired them personally, but were trying to please their parents, their bosses, their partners, their friends, their kids - someone else!

And certainly they have forgotten what is really important to them.

Seth hints at a mental landscape created by marketers where our strong desires of connection, love and shared meaning with others have been hijacked and attached to products.

Ah me - the sense of emptiness when you finally buy the product that promises that connection, love and shared meaning and it just doesn't deliver!

Rose hired this movie the other day and it deals with this subject beautifully using the delightful Angeline Jolie to demonstrate one woman reporter's career ambitions which had their roots in her simply wanting acknowledgement and attention.

Watch the trailer below and hire the video sometime soon! It's all about "What's really important in your life right now?"

So what is it that you really really want Right Now?

Is that what you are in hot pursuit of right now....or are you on the beaten track?

Are you chasing a life of someone else's meaning and purpose...or are you climbing your own mountains?

You better be careful, you might end up singing that song by Peggy Leigh - "Is that all there is?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTpFUT-lxls

Yes I have to agree brilliant movie.
However doesn't it just smack a little of judgement.
Here was a lady who was not only happy with her life she basked in it. Yet she seemed to have to constantly explain why she was happy in it. Always battling someone else's truth of a full and whole life. I wonder if you may make different day to day choices if you had only a week to live. Who might you meet?, what may you actually hear? Once a again we are back at the Peter Pan theory.
As a coach is it not for us to offer all options without judgement and let our clients find their own truth, Knowing that what we bring, our life experiences, fears, joys and questions are all totally relevant. In fact they are often just perfect.
