When you set your goal it helps if you identify a couple of people who can support you: · The Mentor
· The Cheerleader
· The Person who tells you that you can’t do this.
If you want to climb a mountain, the person who walks up and down the mountain every day is the person who is the best person to help you with advice, with advance warning, with feedback to help you improve your techniques and who can sometimes introduce you to people who can help you on your way. This person is called a mentor.
They are successful in whatever field you are entering and we have some proven strategies to help you meet and enrol them onto your team.
As you move forward toward achieving your goal, it’s always helpful to have a Cheerleader to keep encouraging you no matter what happens. You have to be careful when you arrange a cheerleader. Telling them what you need from them really helps them support you. They have to be special people who are willing to encourage you no matter what. Enrolling sceptical or cynical friends in this position is a recipe for frustration, negativity and possible failure.
I don’t know about you, but having som
ebody who tells me I can’t do something is a real motivator to me. I always look for this character to give me me a fire in my belly – I get fired up and say: “I’m going to show you!” You keep this person at a distance, their role can help you raise your ire and fire – you don’t need to share what’s going on – your time to crow is when you prove them wrong.
Get these three roles filled and right and it’s another piece of structure to help you achieve your goal.
