Another Example of Leadership - T. Boone Pickens

Thanks to Presentation Zen for the basis for this article.

I've discussed with you many times about leadership - and the other day I had a conversation with someone who asserted that encouraging everyone to become a leader was a flawed plan.

Given that I've spent a career encouraging people to find and develop their leadership, I was immediately on the defence.

They continued their conversation and postulated that if average people choose to become leaders, it would usually come from self serving and ego boosting motivation....which usually produces tyrants not leaders.

They described compelling Leadership as being someone who was totally focused on a cause or a concept and moving forward with conviction and passion towards it. These sort of leaders are usually selfless and fixated on sharing the benefits of a new order.

I felt instantly humbled - this person was right.

And then I discovered this amazing man who is in hot pursuit of his mission: To get America to be free from importing oil in the next ten years.

He is truly a man on a mission - read on!

Perhaps you've heard by now, but billionaire oil man T. Boone Pickens is on a mission to make sure the USA has an actual energy strategy under the new US president.

He has a plan — The Pickens Plan — and he's been talking about it to anyone who will listen (watch this behind-the-scenes clip from The Daily Show and see how compelling this simple guy is!), and he's put together a nice little four-minute presentation outlining the plan.

Now, Pickens does not get into great detail, but he gives you the story of the plan. In a live setting what would follow from this is lots of discussion, elaboration, and good Q & A, but in the first four minutes you got the story...and you want to hear more.

That's how leaders communicate.
