A new distinction between a Consultant and a Coach.....

I spoke to a client this morning about how confused he felt after going to a seminar about marketing.

He was completely doubting his own capabilty in being able to build a business that was fit for his purposes.

The seminar leader was pushing the line that all businesses need to be expanding, putting on staff and growing their markets....all good stuff, but cetainly a one size fits all approach is bound to be innappropriate for a percentage of the people attending that seminar.

In fact, my client shared the story of "Poppy" lipstick - they took on a marketing consultant, followed what they told them to do and were broke within a very short time.

Consultants will go out and share their knowledge with the world, without taking into consideration a business owner's purpose or values or any other intangible they might have.

Growth is their objective, and growth they will chase.

Thank God for Coaches!

A coach will help their clients come to their own clarity about their purpose, their values and what it is they want to achieve with their business, before they bring in the big guns of strategy, processes and theory.

This just made sense of my years of going to hear "Experts" talk about the six secrets of.... and the ten hot tips of....and how I would be vauguely unsatisfied and reluctant to go into action!
