Yesterday I finally got the difference between a website and a blog. - Silly me!
I was researching a business opportunity and saw an amazing website bristling with videos and testimonials, but with very little substance, not only with the founders introduction and background, but also with the products offered.
My take on it was "great packaging, very little substance!"
And I was comparing this humble little blog with this technological marvel and feeling small and insignificant against this great big fish of the internet.
But this morning it hit me! The main difference between a blog and a website is that a website is a brochure - pure and simple. What you see is not objective, it's going to show the products, services and the owners in the best possible light. It's a promotion!
A blog is different. It's a personal conversation that you can take part in. You get to hear personal insights, wisdom and experience, not in a packaged format, but in conversational gems, straight from the horses mouth. It's the work in action, it's unformed, un polished and sometimes pretty raw - in fact it's much closer to real life than what you get from a website.
I now think that there's more credibility to a blog than a website - what you see is what you get.
My dear friend and mentor, Kevin Lohan, of Endeavor Training in Australia, told me the other day that reading my blog was like hearing me talk. I'm so pleased that someone who knows me that well actually says that!
So, my distinction is that a website is a brochure (all bells and whistles, smoke and mirrors) and a blog is an opportunity to talk to the worker in action (no frills or pretences, working in action).
A web site is in the commercial arena, a blog is in the personal arena.
Let me know what you think.
