This year has Rosh Hashana intersecting with the American Congress voting on a huge $US 700 billion bailout to create a financial floor for the US economy to move forward and avoid a major meltdown.
This amazing Jewish holiday ends with people forming huge drumming circles where they symbolically cast their sins into the water.
And the funny thing about Rosh Hashana this year is that Congress was not able to vote until the end of daylight because so many members of Congress were celebrating Rosh Hashana. That's why the decision is being made public in New Zealand at 10 am this morning. Because a significant number of decision makers are taking time out to reflect.
How cool is that?
How amazing is it, that sometimes the best action is no action / I've got to sleep on it / Let's just think about this for a while while the dust settles / lets spend a day praying, drumming and symbolically casting my sins into water!
Taking the time to reflect, asking the right questions of yourself and giving your unconscious time to process things, is not the norm these days - everyone wants quick decisions...and that might just not be the right thing to do.
In fact, both Obama and McCain, both locked in a presidential campaign struggle, are cautioning that there needs to be a series of checks and some serious thinking about the whole deal.
They both know that whoever wins the presidency - inherits the financial mess that is unfolding on a global stage.
So, I see this is a lesson, with all these world leaders on a stage, showing us the value of taking the time to reflect, of how a funny Jewish holiday, might just be the vehicle for a more measured response.
